Ground control to Major Tom

Sunday, October 4, 2015

Where does the time go?????? Like honestly, it feels like it should be April or something and not October- the spookiest month of them all. Unfortunately I have a big looming deadline hanging over me and my ability to get down and get witchy is seriously hampered. I hope to bring you lots of sparkly and new content next month, as well as December but for now all I can offer is a short moodboard.

Molly Goddard Spring 2016

Saturday, October 3, 2015

When interviewed by Susie Bubble for Topshop's Youtube channel, Molly Goddard hinted at more of her tulle and embellished creations. The idea that something inexpensive such as tulle or calico being transformed through hours of work and various techniques shines through once more. Goddard's signature designs, loosely based on the designer's own baby clothes have carried her in good stead throughout several seasons at London Fashion Week. Last season saw an impromptu art lesson complete with live drawing class. The nature of the show in itself turned heads, but perhaps things are starting to slow down. We've watched each collection progress and mimic stages of adult life from infancy and now into college. As a sign of maturity, Goddard has gone one better, creating floral embroidery on apple green netted dresses and matching tights. As someone who still regularly tosses and turns at night lusting over Rodarte's spiderweb tights I have my heart set on owning some of Molly Goddard's hosiery.

The Armour

Monday, September 21, 2015

Armour is defined as something which offers the wearer protection and is therefore traditionally conceptualised as tough and unforgiving. It is heavy and all but smothers the person underneath, but what if it didn't have to be about hiding the person underneath? Alexander McQueen and more recently Bouchra Jarrar's couture shows have proven that feathers can be used in a similar way. For birds they offer protection from the elements but are also used in order to attract the opposite sex in flashy shows of display or camouflage to suit their surroundings. Many of the aforementioned designers have stuck to rich earthy tones when using their feathers simply allowing texture to reign supreme. Compared to the other couture this season, Susie Bubble noted that Jarrar's collection was a welcome reprieve from the spectacles of fashion week. This resounding approval only reinforces the idea that feathers frequent some of the more spectacular editorials. Indeed it is somewhat overwhelming to imagine where one would wear such an outfit but as always, fashion can be used as more of an escape.

Pastel Perfect

Sunday, August 16, 2015

Pastel tones are often embroiled in the tacky, immature and artificial. However, while highly artificial I think like pop music there can be substance behind these sugary colours. Susie Bubble's 'Plastic Candy' and accompanying works by a plethora of artists largely influenced this moodboard as well as The PowerPuff Girls (hence the blue, pink and green). There's also reference to the (unnamed) movement of artists working with resins, ceramics, plastic, silicon and enamel using a Wes Anderson palette. These pictures are a slight exaggeration on The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and more fixated on ideals of femininity and intersectional feminism. As is my custom I am more interested in women rather than men, especially concerning fashion. That's not to say men cannot embrace pastel tones without wearing perfectly tailored suits but it is more difficult to find clothes which embrace the same bulbous silhouette. These shapes aren't curvaceous in that they do not accentuate the bust, waist and hips that we are accustomed to seeing, but primarily embellish the body in a variety of motifs and textures. I can't wait to immerse myself in more pastel clothes in celebration of spring.
