This post is all about the Models of 2011, more specifically the models working in Mauritius who have made major impact. It's all about the rising stars, the new faces, the established models, a sort of ranking and classification,if you will, on the models, the true ones, working here this year.
Mauritius still doesn't consider modelling as an actual job, I'm guessing because people think that it only involves smiling in front of the camera. In fact, it's possibly one of the toughest and most demanding jobs you could have. Ever wondered why, if modelling was so easy, a shoot lasts on average four hours?
It's tough because you have to become something that you aren't for some hours, and really incarnate the person you are about to become. You have to feel it emotionally, that translates physically into body language and facial expressions. You have to become a vision, and qualifying it as demanding is a severe understatement.
I think that it stirs up so much controversy because it's very much a physical job as well as one that uses mental capacity. When anything physical crops up, people immediately think that it is not right, although technically for any other job no-one would have batted an eyelid.
A model sells clothes. She/he is there to make the clothes look good, to embody the vision of the designer, and to create demand for the product. In today's aesthetic, for a model to sell clothes in the best of her ability she must be very thin, and very tall, so that the emphasis is on the clothes and not on the model's body-a walking clothes hanger. And in most cases, she/he must be beautiful (beautiful according to what aesthetically is considered beautiful in a particular culture at a given moment in time) to create this vision of perfect inaccessibility in order to create demand.
Although there are no set standards here in modelling, I think that it's time to establish some, that are applicable here (if I chose models only above 1m75 I would be left with very few girls) but that conform to a certain extent (some may say that it only conforms if we look at curvier models such as Lara Stone) to international standards. It's a ranking, a list, a classification that shall be done annually at around this time, so you readers know exactly who's who and what's what.
Although I can't further divide the models into specific, distinct criteria (bikini, catwalk,catalogue, lingerie etc) for each model as everyone seems to do almost everything, I have specified who is more specialised in what field).
That is why I have only chosen models who are around 1m70, and who have around these measurements:
Female:
Internationally, the set standards are around (chest/waist/hips): 86-60-86.
Here though, I think the following measurements are appropriate:

The 'It' Girl
Not so much it girl as it girls, as I have chosen two girls for the title:
Katia Moochooram and Nathalie Lesage
Note that although Katia booked more jobs, probably more than any model working here this year, she was followed closely by Natalie. Both girls have made an impression on the minds of the locals and are recognised everywhere.

Katia Moochooram, 21 years old with measurements (bust-waist-hips) of 78-64-87, took the island by storm. After winning the Face of the Month 2008 contest, her popularity gradually increased and in 2011, it just exploded! At 1m69, she concentrates more on editorial and print work rather than runway.
She has worked with around a dozen professional photographers and studios, including Sachin Sagar, Derek Antonio Serra, Charlotte Schousboe, Jean Paul Mussodee,Thomas Bergmair, Aperture Studio, and Reactive studio. She landed campaigns such as Une Histoire d'Amour, Shaffiq Hosse, Lovenci, Island Haze, Fashion House, IV Play, Forever Young, In'Am Winter Collection 2011, Mexx, Wajiha Akram (a Pakistan based designer), HSBC, Helios Polarized and Patrick Mavros Jewellery. The latter have a giant poster of one of the shots above their shop in Fulham road, London. She also has an Essentielle cover and editorial spreads under her belt, and has walked for the Soiree Glamour Fashion Show at Domaine Anna, International Fashion Extravaganza, Light and Glamour Fashion Show, the L'Oreal Fashion Show, and the Fashion House Fashion Show for Summer 2012. Impressive, huh?
She is also an ambassador for Ravior's HOPE Project, and is the July Model for the Mauritius Unfolds calendar.

Nathalie Lesage, 18 years old, started modelling in 2010, booking her first runway show modelling for Tendances and Habit at Le Suffren on the 9th of April (she sent me her CV with the exact dates of every job she has ever done, I was dead impressed!). It was in 2011 though that her career really kicked off, with shows for L'Oreal, Body One, Lida O'Reilly, Sanjeet Boolell and the So Chic So C show at the C Beach Club, and the photoshoots for Possal by Sweetie Ramlagun, Fashion House, Habit, Lifestyle magazine, Lovenci, amongst others. She also stars in the Starwood Hotels-British Airways campaign, and a number of Indian productions such as Phir Se and Ishq Holiday. She is 1m76 and has measurements of 85-70-89.

Three models have been chosen for the title, all of which are going to have amazing careers and have already garnered public attention for their stunning looks, and are at the start of their career.

An absolutely stunning girl, with beautiful features and an endearing sense of humility that makes her one of the best people to work with. She has a look of pure innocence, which is very rare.

Nicknamed the South African bombshell (she is in fact both of Mauritian and South African origin), and considered by many to be one of the most beautiful women in Mauritius right now, the impact Raquel Rault made on the fashion industry here is not to be taken lightly. Together with Anne-lise Ramooloo and a few other models back in 2009/10, they established some standards for modelling that were previously unheard of and at the same time, elevated modelling to greater heights that hadn't been seen before the icons Kitty Philips, Karen Nicolini and Anastasia Ramlall's epoch. The glamour years had returned.

The 24 year old is known for her face, which looks like it was carved out of marble, and her womanly body, but most of all because the girl sells clothes like no other. And no wonder-she has been modelling since 13 years old, and has walked for Miu Miu,Balmain,Gucci, Phillip Lim,Givenchy,Nike Women,Jus d'orange,Chantelle,3 Suisse,Tally Weijl, and in numerous Salon du Pret-a-porter such as the Fashion and Technology Institute Award de Berlin 2003/4, and for Indian designers such as Manish Malhotra,Geisha Designs,Kamiar Rokni and Rehan Shah. She was in no less than 14 runway shows for Berlin Fashion Week 2003/2004,appearing in both Pret a Porter and Couture shows. Fashion guru Prasad Bidapa offered her a place in his agency based in Bangalore, and worked alongside him as a model coordinator.
The Editorial and Campaign-focused Models
If you're a little below the required height for modelling but still want to pursue it as a dream, you can always focus much more on editorial and print work. These two models have become the stars of print and editorial campaigns because of their fantastic faces and facial expressions. Two divine women, presented below:
Anne-lise Nuteau
She started modelling at 8 years old (!) for Permoglaze, and then for commercial products such as Dairy Maid and Servihoo. She later moved on to fashion campaigns such as IV Play (winter and summer), and appeared in Essentielle Magazine, Weekend Scope,La Case, Panorama and Lifestyle (Business Magazine) amongst others.

She is instantly recognizable largely because of the massive Nin's campaign-on billboards, newspapers, videos, leaflets and all other forms of media-and also starred in a videoshoot for Phoenix Cider.
She has modelled for Blue Steel and twice for Shafiq Hossen, for the launching of Nandos, Lumix Digital Camera and the International Jockey's day. Her height hasn't stopped her from walking for Anu Sumputh, 100 years of L'Oreal, and Lide O'Reilly. In addition, she has also this year starred in photos for the Spa du Trou aux Biches Hotel and of India Vogue and walked for Lee Cooper.

Angelique has been featured in print work in weekly publications, as well as being the cover girl of Essentielle Magazine in December 2010, featured in People Magazine (Visage by Virginie Lacoste) and is the October model for the Mauritius Unfolds calendar.
She has also walked the runway for Billabong (from 2006-2011), MD by Maeva Delarue, The DJ Assad Fashion Show at Domaine Anna, So Chic So C and Fashion House (2010 and 2011).
She has recently appeared in a commercial for Danone in Reunion,as a bride for The Shandrani Hotel for a Beachcomber movie, and appeared in a short movie for Le Only and Only Saint Geran.

She is just such a fantastic model with a face that shows so much expression, and has worked with many photographers such as Sachin Sagar, Karen Pang, Marjorie Lee, Bertrand Li, Farhana Toorab, Joel Capillaire, Thomas Bergmair, Michael Roussel, Chloe Ip, Michael Boldrini amongst others. Although she hasn't starred in a career defining campaign yet, that should come very quickly. At 26 years old, she can both look very innocent and seductively mature, which you can see in her portfolio.

She started modelling at the age of 11, and her first advert was for Coca Cola (on billboards) in 2003. She then walked for the IVTB (now Fashion and Design Institute) fashion show in 2006 (under HEAT agency) and in 2011 (under Gold Models), at the Champ de Mars for fascinators in 2008, for the University of Mauritius in 2008 (HEAT) and 2011 (Gold Models) and starred in an advertisement for Rebirth Spa in 2007 as well as featuring in TV advertisements for Slim in 2009 and Rimilda in the same year.
By 2010-2011she started to evolve pretty fast: She walked for MD Maeva Delarue in 2010, Fashion House (2010 and 2011), So Chic So C, CTI Fashion Show, Harley Davidson, Riverland and Billabong, and participated in a fashion show for Deepavaly at Reunion Island in 2010. Plus, she has worked with Jameel Peerally for a photoshoot, appeared in Essentielle in both 2010 and 2011, where she was also the cover, and most recently for the Fashion House advertisement.

20 years old and at 1m76 Charlotte made it into the industry in the period of 2010-2011.

She started back in 2007, with a photoshoot for Essentielle and walked for the Festival de La Mode at Swami Vivekananda, and in 2008-2009 landed the cover of Essentielle Magazine, walked for The Festival Creole and became the ambassador for Le Bois Cherie Restaurant and starred in their campaign.
By the end of 2010, she had 10 runway appearances under her belt including Sasha Hair and Fashion Show, La Nuit Glamour, L'Oreal, Lida O'Reilly, MD Maeva Delarue, Grays and featured in campaigns such as V de Guardia, Bella Donna, Tendances, Fashion House and Bluesteel. The 22 year old start modelling at the age of 12, but started doing it full time after her HSC exams when she was 18. That same year, she participated in the Miss Mauritius pageant where she finished as second runner up.

Rachelle also co-presented the auditions for Dance Fever on MBC thanks to Jerry Nayna 2 years ago and also did some background acting in different types of movies ( 6 times in Indian productions and twice in French ones).

A model, photographer, actor, presenter, event organiser and the list goes on and on and on. The 28 year old, who started modelling in 2009, can morph into absolutely anything expected of him.

As an actor, he was lead (!) actor in French movie called ‘Eve de ses Decombres’ by Swiss Production Team shot in Mauritius to be aired in February 2012,as well as in an English film called ‘Amber’ by Dutch Production Team shot in Mauritius to be aired end of Dec 2012 and he also played in the latest short movie shot by MTV India and to be aired as from Sept 2011 (Ishq Holidays).
To top it all off, this year he organised the fashion show at Swami Vivekananda for the official launch of the Mauritian outfit participating at the Games of the Indian Ocean 2011 in Seychelles.

One of the most famous Mauritian male models, if not the most famous, Shameer is a star who began modelling at the age of 16, 22 years ago. He formed part of various agencies such as Lamborghini and Haseena, and now is with HEAT for a serious comeback.

He started out with Haseena for which he booked 250 jobs per year for nearly ten years, and then walked for Asif Merchant and Rohit Bal in India. He is the only Mauritian model to my knowledge to have starred in campaigns for D&G , Armand Basi and Giorgio Armani, which is a prestigious achievement and the pride of
Mauritius.
