Was it a mere coincidence that the day I watched the Seinfeld episode 'The Truth' (Season 3) that Asos featured these earrings in their most recent newsletter? I don't believe in coincidences.

Shine bright like a diamond

I wore this outfit a few weeks ago now when I went thrift shopping (and surprisingly found nothing I liked), but then went to a friend's house for dinner. Dinner was delicious and then we played a game of pictionary whilst trying to explain what it is we as student geologists do. Hanging out with friends is always nice AND I got to play with his pet cat Misery. Everyone agrees it's possibly the greatest name for a cat. Anyway crazy cat lady shenanigans aside, it's always nice to be able to dress up every now and then and this is probably the most heavily 80s inspired outfit I've worn since I first got into fashion at about age fourteen or fifteen. There's also a definite flair or sassieness, probably due to the influence of the ladies and gentlemen featured on Advanced Style.

White Widow

I miss the presence of Meadham Kirchhoff collections at London Fashion Week so so much. I feel like they left the fashion industry so suddenly we were never really given a chance to protest or express our indignation and now the only thing left to do is mourn. I know it sounds childish to miss artists whose work I never experienced first hand, or met in person but I still feel a real sense of loss both for the fashion community but also teenage girls. For the latter their work was the most informative and influential, it brought together pastels and Riot Grrl movement in perfect synergy. For many it introduced the idea that personal style as well as music could express political ideologies and the self-proclaimed feminists set Instagram on fire when they announced an open casting for what was to be their last collection. I don't think we'll see anything quite like them in the future, and anything that does look similar in aesthetic will certainly miss the same stage presence brought to each of their shows.

I'm aware I'm a wolf

Bill Cunningham once described clothing as the armor for everyday life and today I chose to interpret that in the most literal sense. Armor doesn't have to feel weighty or oppressive though, its purpose is to offer you some kind of protection. In this case that comfort was purely psychological for me but came in the form of knitwear, feathers and the colour red. I came to realise I was unconsciously referencing the garb worn by San from Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. She too wore large earrings, moved with the ease and fluidity of a wolf and had had red markings on her face, as well as blood stains from fighting. My marabou feather earrings felt more like the feathers collected from arrows which again exaggerated this warrior-like state. Largely it feels like I am fighting with myself most days, or that any turmoil is completely internalized as I struggle to do what is right and keep myself satisfied. Self-exploration has become more important than ever as I continually try to figure out who I am and who it is I am trying to become.

Growth

I've been obsessed with personal development and growth over the last couple of weeks. It's been difficult for me but I've finally reached a point where I can be honest with myself about my personal relationships and when to move on. To celebrate my new found freedom I dressed like a plant witch, although to be honest I look more like a character from Dynasty. This has largely to do with my slightly padded shoulders and the amount of clashing prints in this outfit. Most of my time has been spent learning about plants lately as they are an integral part of my honours thesis. I've also learned more about mushrooms than I ever thought I would in a lifetime. It just goes to show that life never really turns out the way you thought it would be. Also, I thought wearing body glitter on my eyelids was a good idea but after about an hour or so the glitter had slowly migrated onto my cheeks. I'll probably find glitter in the bathroom and around the house for the next month.

Lady Petrova A/W Launch Party

I remember when I was sixteen, floating around in the city with my friends and stumbling across Lady Petrova for the very first time. It comes as quite a surprise to me, that five years later and after surviving adolescence (WOOHOOO!!) that her store is still going strong and is in fact thriving. You may remember I attended her Social Media Socialite class in April as part of her School of Fabulousness and got to eat cupcakes and drink tea in the presence of some of Melbourne's most lovely ladies. A few weeks ago now I was invited to attend the launch of Lady Petrova's Autumn/ Winter collection, Poetic Science largely inspired by the first computer programmed Ada Lovelace. The promise of my two passions, science and fashion coming together in a beautiful marriage was enough to lure me away from my blanket fort. With gourmet cupcakes and tea at the ready, as well as an entire collection and lookbook to investigate in person I couldn't resist! Thank you to all the lovely ladies who chatted with me and dressed up, in particular Kristine Walker of The Human Chameleon (whose work I am obsessed with!) as well as Stacey from Stuz Photography for taking my portrait.
