Heart Breaker

Thursday, September 10, 2015

Wearing: Saddle shoes by Ati Lin, Dangerfield dress, Target sweater, Nasty Gal faux leather jacket (handpainted by Esther Kim of estherlovesyou) and Meadham Kirchhoff X Topshop handbag.

I can't believe I've had this jacket for months now and haven't worn it once! Well that's not completely true I wore it once but hadn't looked at it since then. However, it's the first time I've featured it on this blog and I bet you're all dying to know where it came from! The jacket is faux leather made by Nasty Gal and the back panel was hand painted by artist Esther Kim from estherlovesyou. Esther ran a competition on her instagram several months ago now and lo and behold- I was the winner! This outfit was actually meant to go with this moodboard but I kept putting it off. I was worried that it might feel too cliche or whatever, but I also felt like my old hair wasn't really on par with the whole outfit. Since having it cut and colour I feel much more confident in my own body, but also my ability to create outfits which aren't for the male gaze and are purely an escape from the mundane. Hence why this outfit is more like an exaggeration of the final scene from Grease (1978) with some Cry-Baby (1990) thrown in for good measure but movie nostalgia aside this look was inspired by real women.

Artsy

Wearing: Tokito dress, thrifted tights, saddle shoes from Atilin, Ichi Knee onigiri earring and badges from Minna Gilligan.

I wore this outfit on the last day of perfect Autumn weather in Melbourne, before the week it rained non-stop and people complained about it more than normal. Yes I was a bit cold without a jacket but how else was I supposed to show off my cute little badges? They were made by Melbourne artist, Minna Gilligan, who I seem to write about on a monthly basis. To emphasise the art aesthetic I decided to wear horizontal stripes, red lipstick and a single earring in the shape of a Japanese food. I rarely wear this dress now since it's a bit loose on me but I love how it looks with my saddle shoes. I've also wanted to wear more makeup lately, for myself as a way of adding colour to my outfits rather than for the attention of men or approval of other women. This also echoes the sentiment on one of my badges, without necessarily being seen as confrontational. I believe that at its core fashion should be about creativity and self-expression rather than conforming to an idea of how we should lead our lives.

Real witches don't wear black

Wearing: Meadham Kirchhoff X Topshop dress, deadstock tights, POMS earrings, Topshop zebra print jacket and Atilin saddle shoes.

One of my favourite things to do is take a well-known troupe and deconstruct it and then rebuild it in my own image. Witchy chic is one of those things normally associated with lots of black, dried rose petals and wooden trinket boxes but instead I decided to make it more cute and kitsch. While I admit this look definitely needs like a cute pentagram necklace or something I am happy with how it turned out. I've been so busy wearing my Asos faux fur coat that I totally forgot about this zebra piece for a little while. It's not exactly versatile but it is super fun to wear with other patterns such as this dress. The weather is finally cold enough that I can wear these cute tights again and I no longer feel that it's necessary to wear a petticoat with this dress. I think it demonstrates that slowly I am growing in confidence not just in terms of my outfits but also my body type.

Spring / Summer

Monday, May 18, 2015

I'm beginning to notice similarities between some of my favourite photographers, artists and practitioners. Specifically the photos taken for Atilin's shoes and Eleanor Hardwick's photo shoot with Tenko for Rookie Mag. It's strange to think how two different people can arrive at very similar ideas, with each set of photographs focusing on a particular season. What's even more serendipitous is that they look as if they could have been taken on the same day. These photos are particularly relevant to my readers who are ready to enjoy months of Spring and Summer but anyone who is feeling the cold. While  I do love Winter and getting to wear lots of layers I do wish there was a bit more sunshine to take some photos of my own! If you're looking for some cute summer dresses I recommend taking a look at the Atilin Facebook page if you liked any of the dresses or shoes from those photos. I'm totally in awe of her talent and humbled someone able to create such beautiful pieces is inspired by my outfits

In the Pink

Friday, April 10, 2015

Wearing: Meadham Kirchhoff X Topshop sweater, Emma Mulholland denim shorts, Atilin saddle shoes and cat amulet by ginette lapalme (etsy).

I normally don't wear all pink, nor am I the first in my age group to do it (see Pink Zoe Experiment) but I thought it would be fun. Plus it gave me an excuse to wear my cat amulet from Toronto artist Ginette Lapalme which I should wear more often to be honest. People certainly treat you differently when you wear all pink- it's like you're some crazed lunatic or something. It's certainly a different reaction than say, if you were to wear all black in which case you are effortlessly chic and epitomize style, elegance and grace. Or people are more likely to comment and say something snarky compared to wearing all black though. It kind of sucks that people think their opinion carries greater weight than say your own self-esteem or creativity but I've learned not to let it bother me. This frame of thinking has largely been helped by badass bloggers such as Susie Bubble and Tavi Gevinson who learn not to take things to heart (unless what they did was genuinely offensive or showed some kind of prejudice).

Atilin Handmade Shoes

Thursday, April 9, 2015

If you've been dreaming about a pastel filled world where rad babes where amazing leather shoes and equally rad chokers, I'm here to tell you that it exists. It's run by the amazingly talented Ati Lin from Argentina who not only has a great eye for style but strong sense of morality. You see, not only does her make the shoes by hand but the leather she uses are 100% recycled offcuts of the highest quality. With these materials Ati seeks to introduce new colours combinations and textures in order to create something new and exciting. Rather than following trends she wants to achieve something different or subconsciously references the sub-cultures and those that inspire her. I've been mooning over her saddle shoes but she also makes combat boots, Mary Janes and platforms in a variety of different colours, even holographic materials! You can check out all her designs at her Etsy store, or on Facebook or Instagram.

These photos also really reminded me of something Tavi posted on Style Rookie five years ago now, which I thought was also worth sharing.
