I must have a snake in my boot

Thursday, November 12, 2015

First I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise for the deception in case you were looking for snakeskin boots. I'm obsessed with snakes in fashion, but rather than wearing their skins I'm digging prints and patterns. Take this Poppy Lissiman clutch and Hayley Elsaesser dress for example. Both gorgeous pieces which I currently cannot afford.

Mooi en Lief X Tolly Dolly Posh

Monday, October 19, 2015

Last month (yup, it's been that long) I won a pair of socks from Tolly Dolly Posh, the blog of a fifteen year old who spends her time in the UK and France, with an amazing blog. She's collaborated with Dutch brand Mooi en Lief to create a chic range of socks suitable for wearing with wellies! While it'll soon be too hot to wear knee high rubber boots, I still had the immense pleasure of unboxing these bad boys which came with a hand-written note, and some other goodies!

It felt like I was receiving a package from a pen pal, not a company, which was the most endearing experience of winning. Along with bragging rights. I maintain those are still very important. The socks were inspired by roller skate rinks of the 1970s and are aptly named, 'Electric Blue'. Their namesake comes from the David Bowie song, Song and Vision. Simple in design, but a striking shade of blue I admit I'm struggling to figure out what to wear with these- but I'll think of something!

The Craft

Wearing: Romance Was Born dress, thrifted cardigan and J.W. Anderson shoes.

Today's outfit is equal parts craft techniques and more ethereal ~witchy vibes~. This dress is such a special piece and I always feel so potent and powerful when I wear it. Originally I was inspired by all things haberdashery but extended that metaphor to mother of pearl buttons and yarn for something warm. These are the last photos I took at Philip Island but hopefully I'll be back soon! It was so hard deciding what clothes to being and even though we were only visiting for three days I wanted to make the most of it. I can now see why packing for Fashion Week is such a big deal, and why weeks of deliberation are spent making these decisions. Packing these shoes probably took the most room, but each piece took up a considerable amount of space. In my defense, a winter wardrobe will need to have a little more weight and texture to it. I have every intention of channelling my inner witch next season, which means lots of long flowing dresses with some Stevie Nicks vibes. It's so hard not to feel influenced by the 70s inspiration that swept the runway last season, but as always I've interpreted using my own colour palette and aesthetic.

Mormo Fall 2015

Monday, July 6, 2015

We've waited well over six months for the release of Mormo's exciting monster-themed bag collection, with a few last minute technical glitches acting as the final barrier. I stumbled across this brand when flicking through Instagram and was instantly transfixed by the concept as well as realistic features of each bag. The account in itself is as good as any micro-blog and undoubtedly it's one of the driving reasons behind the brands success and hype. Mormo also strive to deliver a niche, luxury piece with a quirky sense of humour. Since I have a penchant for stuff that looks like other stuff, so naturally I wanted to explore the site more. There I found a lookbook which incorporated elements of a kid's restaurant menu, as well as vintage pastel gogo boots. Although it seems the lookbook has been ready for months now, but the production of these limited released backpacks and leather totes was much more complex. Mormo have not compromised on craftsmanship, an inherent element of the design of each bag.

The three mascots somewhat reminiscent of Nickelodeon's "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" (come on, who else remembers that show raise your hand) include Spike, Snotty and Drool. While you'd hardly call them charming and I expect someone more conservative like my mother to cringe, each certainly has a unique character and unique element incorporated as part of its design. They certainly make a lively addition to any wardrobe, and serve as a delightful alternative for someone like me who is by no means a bag snob and relatively new to that aspect of fashion blogging. I've somehow managed to avoid purchasing a sensible quality handbag and continue to delight in discovering unique, alternative design. Although I was first attracted to the sleek patent leather and shackle-like hands of the Drool backpack I think I'm beginning to like Spike more! While it's not the most imaginative name, he does come with three different collars PLUS his namesake was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer heartthrob. You can totally see the resemblance, right?

If there's one thing I can't stand it's a copycat- whether it be an academic cheat or someone without an ounce of originality still able to achieve commercial success. I admire those brands who are able to ensure their designs remain relatively untouchable by combining their love of fine materials and quality. This is intrinsic to Mormo's business model, but one wonders what will be next once their much anticipated Fall 2015 collection launches. I suspect much of it will depend on the reception of their first drop, and concentrate efforts to meet demand should it exceed any and all expectation. Possible future direction for the brand include the expansion upon some of their motifs from this collection and possibly make leather cuffs or a pair of snotty earrings. This is all just conjecture because I have no idea what Mormo will do next or what they're capable as a brand. They came out of nowhere and I have the fear that they could fall into obscurity just as easily. I'm just hoping that they prove me wrong and create something even more spectacular.

Strawberry Fields Forever

Wearing: Thrifted jacket, sweater and trousers from Target, Kenji heels and Sara Sboul buffy muff.

First of all sorry about the rubbish quality of these photos, I've been so busy lately there hasn't been much time to really stop and gather my thoughts. Things have only been complicated now that my dad is on leave and has started gardening again hence the strange photo-bombing ceramic pot. I really wanted to show off my new Sara Sboul hand muff which I bought for 75% off the regular price (thanks to a special code on top of a half price discount applied to all hand muffs). I had hoped to win the complete look in their instagram competition but alas the lovely Glasgow fashion blogger from Forever Yours Betty won. She took some lovely snaps of her new accessories at London Fashion Week. The Buffy Muff was by far my favourite product from the trio so I just had to snap it up- it's so quirky and unusual! If you haven't heard of Sara Sboul her bags have also been seen on the Beckerman Twins and she's just collaborated with
Clio Pippiatt on their latest line of accessories. I think she might be stocked at Melbourne's Lady Petrova very soon, plus there may be another collaboration with artist Esther Kim of estherlovesyou
