And that marks the end of the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 article.Keep reading for My Week and My Fashion Memories.

My Week:
Went to Phoenix Les Halles and was shocked. The place is dead, people.A ghost mall, where many shops such as IV Play and Courts have closed down.Yet there are sales offering 50% off on clothes!!
It (the mall) has dismally failed for a couple of reasons:

1.The purchasing power of the people has gone down. This current problem would be solved if
a)the prices went down on all commodities (could be put into practice)
b)People were given an overall increase in salary without there being an increase in price (not likely to happen)

2.The shopping mall is "closed".Usually a very popular marketing strategy to make people forget the notion of time, shopping malls in other countries tend to "trap" the customer in a building. For some incredible reason, mauritians HATE shopping in closed spaces. It gives them the creeps-something very unique here. That's why Bagatelle Mall of Mauritius, Centre Commercial de Phoenix and other malls are open spaces.

3.The marketing: There is an incredible lack of hype.Look at Bagatelle for example-even if you have never read a newspaper you know about the project and are super excited for it to open.

Something else that constantly irritates me-Trianon Centre point.Or what was to be centrepoint-now a 53% complete pile of cement that hits the eye and spoils the mood. Please,if there are ANY potential investors reading this,DO SOMETHING!!!

Otherwise you people probably know that there are massive shopping malls erupting in every corner of the island: Circle Square at Forbach, the very famous, ultra advertised ,super hyped up Mall of Mauritius, Cascavelle Shopping Centre, Grand Baie La Croisette to name a few. That's really awesome but will there be enough people with the right amount of money to make these malls work?

I don't think that the government, the investors and enterprises realise that the average mauritian salary is about Rs17,195 per month with a Gross National Income per capita of Rs206,340 or USD$7240 (per year). With that, the person has to pay water, electricity, other household bills,food,education....the list goes on and on.Plus, the person most probably has a debt on his head, from loans or hire purchase products. Now, if the average salary goes right up to Rs50,000, stuff changes. He can spend more or save more (given the interest rate right now, the person is going to spend rather than put his money in the bank).
My point is simple: If you are going to have that many firms investing in your country, you have to increase the purchasing power of the people by a considerable amount.Otherwise all of those fantastic beautiful malls will be for absolutely nothing.A handful of rich people will not be able to save them.

My fashion memories.
I always read very fast, even as a kid. When I first saw the words Burberry Prorsum (I was nine) I didn't pay much attention to the Prorsum part, misread and in my head it stuck as possum for quite a while.Burberry Possum!!

Instead of

I was about eight the first time I saw a fashion show on TV and could remember it, I believe.I could have been younger. My dad and I were watching TV when suddenly this beautiful woman came out on the catwalk-it was an outdoor show-and she had this really beautiful blue dress on but it was cut at parts so at one point, her whole left butt cheek was exposed.I covered my dad's eyes and told him he couldn't look, it would be cheating on my mum.I continued watching though-the following piece was a white feathered creation with lace, also showing the butt.It made quite an impression.

I know some parents ban their daughters wearing makeup until they are about 16 years old.My mum would ALWAYS put a little bit of makeup on me when I was a kid if I was performing in the school play or going out to somewhere important. If there was an essential to carry on,it was pink lipstick. My parents were always extremely liberal on fashion and makeup, thank God.

My little sister and I would put on fashion shows in the house. We did this until I was at least 10 years old, before the 'I'm awkward, geeky, shy and embarrassed" phase started.
