Rainy Days

Thursday, June 30, 2011

This article will be devoted to how to dress up for the rainy weather.
We are suffering from changes in weather patterns and conditions, which explains the recent rain these past few days.Of course, some of you may think "If you just carry an umbrella you can wear anything".Not so because
(a) When it rains,it pours.Your umbrella doesn't give you that much protection and waiting for the rain to stop can take a long time.
(b) After it rains and the sun comes out,it gets HUMID.Horrible, sticky humidity.
(c)Rain = major fashion drama in all aspects.I'm talking about shoes, clothes and hair people.

Plus,I have noticed that people generally think that dressing up in preparation for rainy weather is the same as wearing normal clothes+umbrella. It's not the case.

I'm going to start with what you should really avoid wearing.
1.Anything that is wide-leg or maxi.That is,avoid your wide-leg jeans or maxi skirt/dress.

They will drag you down. Not only will the hems catch water, but as the raindrops splatter your skirt/dress/jeans they can render it really heavy and uncomfortable.

2.Heels

I'm talking about high,medium-length,kitten etc. Don't. Wedges are ok I guess, but the pavements here are really terrible so you could slip or trip easily.

3.Natural Fibers as exposed cover ups (That is,they should only be kept as layers underneath clothing)

Claudia Schiffer's new line.
When wet, they can smell. So avoid wool or cashmere as a cover up-layer something waterproof on top.

4.These fabrics in general: Leather, faux/real fur, suede and silk.

5.White.
For obvious reasons.

6.Anything voluminous or billowing.

Voluminous skirts and dresses will bog you down terribly.

What you want to achieve is utilitarian chic.

I'll start from the bottom up:
Feet: You do not want to go for ballerinas or a sandal-your feet will be all wet and uncomfortable.Go for a flat pair of boots,in a water resistant material.

Legs: Either a thick pair of tights or skinny jeans will do the trick. If you really want to wear a dress or a skirt put a pair of tights under them.Try cropped pants too.

Above: all ASOS

Do NOT forget that when choosing trousers, avoid styles that crop at the widest part of your calves-they'll make your leg look fat.

Now you want to add different layers to your outfit to keep you warm, removing the layers as it gets hotter and more humid.
Start with a basic light long sleeved shirt or T-shirt.

Add a jumper. You need something slightly heavier and chunkier on top so as to contrast with your leggings/skinny jeans/trousers.

On top of all of that, you want to finish off with a water resistant jacket, trench coat, macintosh or the new upgraded parka, one of the key items seen on the fall runways.

You want to concentrate on texture without making the outfit bulky or too heavy.Make your look as interesting as possible with prints (though don't go overboard) and colour to brighten everything up a little.
Try a bright scarf or bag for instant pop. These accessories are from Forever 21.

All of the items above are in the price range of $3.80-$8.80 .However, they don't ship to Mauritius!Let's hope that they start soon!

On accessories,I popped in FAITH by Nalini Aubeeluck the other day.Not only is it a clothes shop,it's also a hairdressing and massage salon with a dance studio!
I found the most beautiful clothes and accessories there-you should go and check it out.

And lastly, hair.Do not even bother with your straightening iron.If your hair looks really bad,tie in a bun and add a cute hat (beware of the felt, knit or any hat made up of that soaks up water).

Have a great week and amazing weekend!
xoxo
