Wardrobe basics.

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Remember those times when,on opening your wardrobe and seeing a waterfall of clothes tumbling down, you think"I don't have anything to wear?"
Thats because you haven't invested in basics. With them, any look becomes possible, and you will never be in times of crisis again. Why would I write on basics?Well it saves you money-you don't constantly need to update your wardrobe-and its a concept I don't think many people here know about. Its more of a "mass buying" concept-people buy en masse and in a few months repeat the process,if they have the money, because the material looks terrible afterwards.Spend some extra money on basics-they are investment pieces.

1.You have to invest in a couple of tank tops and plain t-shirts of good material-cotton is good.If you buy them in neutral colours, they work with everything.Oliver Theyskens' Theory collection appeals immensely to me.

2.A pair of black jeans, black trousers, white trousers, and a nice dark denim jean.Buy a nice straight-legged pair.Bell-bottoms went out of fashion years ago.Ripped denim comes and goes but it isn't an investment piece.Black trousers, once again Oliver Theyskens for Theory Fall 2011 (I just can't get enough of his collection.)

3.A coat.(my previous article was on the coat,so no details here.Picture from Fall 2011 Fendi)

4.A white blouse.People, you do not KNOW how important this is.It can NEVER be underestimated.I have several of them and they work with everything and are undeniably chic. This blouse is from Celine Spring 2011 RTW.This is an example of minimalist dressing, btw.

5.A black dress. This will save you countless times.By something in a slightly heavier material in a simple but very effective design.I bought my life-saver from Jenni Fashion two years ago. That dress still looks brand new.
I haven't seen LBDs (little black dresses) on women here very often. They prefer the embroidered, colourful kind, and as for teenage girls, they seem to have an unhealthy taste in the very short, very lurex and VERY revealing type of dress-well when it barely covers the derrière the notion of dress disappears completely. The best example of the perfect Black Dress is the one that Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's.It endures.

Once those basics are in your wardrobe, you can experiment. You could even opt for this all in one ensemble instead of an LBD.I am going gaga over this one from Hakaan Fall 2011.Its just pure perfection.I am getting one made immediately.

6.Then comes the bag.Spend more money on a beautifully crafted masterpiece that will endure through time and not one which will rip and have to be replaced in two months.A simple design works wonderfully well.
A classic example is the Hermes Jypsiere Bag.

Always remember to invest in quality, not quantity.
