999 Emergency!+New York Fashion Week

Thursday, September 15, 2011

My blog also covers some beauty tips, so this 999 Emergency will be devoted to both beauty and style in:

My Face looks HORRIBLE, and I need to look presentable. HELP ME!

Whether its jet lag, an all-nighter (studying, partying etc-where you couldn’t get any sleep at all), or some sort of horrible or nightmarish incident that has you feeling horrid and where you can’t look after yourself properly, here’s how to make you look the best you can be in those circumstances, in a couple of minutes.

Step 1: If you have freshly washed hair, great! But if it is horrible and takes more than 10 minutes to wash and be maintained (and you really do not have more time than that), tie it into a bun (not tightly, though), and wear a hat if you are going out ( NOT  a cap, but a cute hat!).  Hair can give off really bad smells (like cigarette smoke) so it’s better to keep it under wraps.
Additionally, you can also stock up on dry shampoo, which saves the day.

Step 2: Remove all your make-up, immediately. No matter how much make-up you put on, if it is slathered over tired skin, it won’t work. It isn’t magic. Wash, tone and moisturise your skin-I like Clinique’s 3 Steps that only takes about 2 minutes. Then, layer a tinted moisturiser.

Step 3: Clever concealer. Use concealer that has yellow colour-correcting pigments, and apply on the corner of the eye, working your way to the nose and gradually blending it out so that it looks natural.

Step 4: Comfort is key. That does not mean going out in pyjamas or tracksuits, but rather opting for materials that are really comfortable and are easy to wear-say a wool dress, paired with black tights and ankle boots.

Fashion Week as it happens: New York.

Favourite shows so far:

The Row ( label created by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen): Airy, loose, and quite Asian inspired, it was brilliant and so easily wearable.

Jason Wu: As with BCBG and Vena Cava, they used bright colour, though more of the sorbet kind, and flower prints.

Rag & Bone: Lots of layering with athletic appeal.

BCBG Maz Azria: I love their athletic take on the dresses, and the colours they used: brights and neutrals together that are just perfect for summer!

Vena Cava: Orange was their colour, and they provided a whole wardrobe for a city girl this summer.

Altuzarra: Street athleticism with Hawaiian prints.

Helmut Lang: There was athleticism present, but it was not as obvious as in the Altuzarra and Wang collections. Instead, if there were four words to define the pieces, it would be sharp but fluid cuts. Stunning pieces that are made to be worn.

Monique Lhuillier: Athleticism, stunning dresses and colours+neutrals.

Prabal Gurung: Fetish from the Winter 2012 collections prevails. He also took floral prints to new level by using withering flowers.

Diane Von Furstenberg: Floral prints, and an optimistic style (the show was held on the 9.11 anniversary, so it was sort of fitting that the mood would be 'let's go on forward'.

Derek Lam: Athletic, mood of the lost glamour of the 'old Hollywood stars on holiday' feel, but very modern.

Narciso Rodriguez: Sharp yet fluid, minimalist yet painted upon- a mix of genres that was different from what was seen so far in New York.

Almost all of the designers had an athletic trend in their collections-athleticism is almost a trademark of American fashion anyway, so its not such a big surprise. In London fashion week though I am expecting an Olympic sportswear trend to be present because of the 2012 Olympics.
Colours: Orange, lime green/yellow and Blue were predominant.
Print: Hawaiian.

Charles Telfair Institute (CTI) is holding a fashion show on the 28th of September. It promises to be the best fashion show ever held by an academic institution in this country, so stay tuned. I will of course be covering the event.

Have a great week and amazing weekend
xoxo
