The Return of the Lady

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Goodbye to all of those years of short hems, this is the winter of the Lady.
And am I glad that it’s the case! 2011 marked the end of the slutty movement that was overbearingly present at the end of this decade. It isn’t about going back to the past and adopting the look head on. It’s all about making it contemporary.
Platforms? A product of a generation that is now officially passé. Whether it was kitten heels last season or brogues , mary janes and stilettos, it’s time to tell your platforms goodbye-well,at least until its time comes back again.

Does Mauritius do lady like fashion? The obvious answer is no. The typical shops only manufacture the tightest and shortest latex or stretch-cotton dresses. Jeans are tight and show plenty of bum. In addition, vintage is a non-existent concept.
Will this article change things? No. But I know I will be sporting this trend throughout winter. Knits and pencil skirts will be my mot d’ordre, make no mistake.

Lady like is not in your face luxury. It’s the new look of Christian Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga’s tight pencil skirts and sculptural drapery in the late 40s and early 50s to the 60s.Today, it’s those elements of sophisticated class brought to the contemporary working woman who doesn’t have time for flafla. Although as for example at Gucci all the accessories matched the clothes, runway to realway is quite different. Its the parka over the pretty lace dress, the tailored jacket that flares slightly on the hip combined with a pencil skirt, chunky printed knits, slightly distressed tweed….

It’s not difficult to adopt. Instead of going to work in trousers and a shirt, trade for a pencil skirt and a delicately ruffled blouse with a heel that is not a platform. Going out for coffee? Team a delicately pleated dress with a parka. Heading to university?  Invest in a printed knit and pair with slim (not skin tight) straight leg jeans, or how about adopting a tailored tweed jacket that is slightly frayed?
Make sure that your skin/clothes ratio is correct-you don’t want to look too prim.An easier way to make it look modern is to style your hair in a messed up chignon.
