Oscars!

Monday, February 28, 2011

On the actual ceremony,no surprise-the "King's Speech" RACKING the awards, and Natalie Portman winning for "Black Swan",et cetera.
But I'm not writing about that.
I'm writing on fashion. Why?Because in Mauritius, the concept-that is, writing about fashion-is almost unheard of.Sure you have magazines and newspapers, but I haven't seen any of them write on London/Paris/Milan/Brazil fashion week(although Le Matinal does do sometimes) on Pret-a-Porter or Haute Couture. There is no mention of Avant Garde, on models, nothing.

I am here to write and let you know about them.

So lets start with my first entry.
The Oscars(or the Academy Awards) are the most prestigious award ceremony that exists.FYI:In the UK there is the British Academy of Film and Television Awards,in France the Cesar, and so on.

A big trend:Red.Red everywhere, worn beautifully on Sandra Bullock to unflatteringly on Anne Hathaway,to very sexily worn on Penelope Cruz(boobs, anyone?),to minimalist on Jennifer Lawrence(It reminded me of the dress version of the Baywatch swimsuit).
And then the neutrals: Halle Berry in Marchesa,Hilary Swank-incredible beading and feathers at the train),Cate Blanchett,Hailee Steinfeld, Michelle Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow-in an amazingly sleek Calvin Klein concotion that looked as if metal was pouring down her.

Was this pure coincidence?Of course not.
The Spring runways were FILLED with two contrasting trends: Colour Splash and Stripped Back Minimal.

Colour Splash: vivid colours, almost Crayola,neon- like at times, made a huge statement with designers like Giambattista Valli,Miu Miu,Jil Sander, Versace and Missoni all sending their models down the runway in full colour.

Stripped Back Minimal:One of my favourite designers,Alexander Wang, sent his models down the runway all in white(no black this season),and finished with ivory, mint and terra-cotta for his final pieces.Celine( I love Phoebe Philo. She is the incarnation of good taste)  and Chloe echoed the same trend,as did other designers.

Is it that difficult to echo some of this great new vibe into our wardrobes? Is it superficial? No.
Designers do not create pieces of art to be superficial. Its to express a state of mind,a thought, inspiration(For Spring,Stella McCartney went for the fruit.Check Style.com to see what I mean) an idea,a feeling.

When the financial crisis hit in 2008,designers immediately felt the sense of growing insecurity, the general vibe, the echoes of cries all around them. That season, they went for heavy, jewel tones, and black to express the more sombre state of mind.
Now,its vivid,or white.Pure.Uplifting.

I found an amazing, slightly toned-down light neon green dress at l'Entrepot the other day.I went on and bought a very bright blue dress in the very same shop that echoed the same vibe, without having read the March edition of British Vogue or Elle. Why?Because whenever I see it,I just feel a little happier. Its such a contrast to my preferred neutral-palette clothing.

And guess what?Mauritian designers have sensed the trend, too.Annabelle Fleury's newest collection contains clothes in Opaline amongst others.
Inject happiness in your wardrobe.Trust me,it works.
