There are many legends of ghosts and monsters in Korea, but have you ever heard of the legendary girl who wanders the mountains in search of travellers… then eats them alive.
South Korea is notorious for having many legendary ghosts and monsters that often feature in various summer films to give you the chills. Amongst them, there is one monster that cannot be dismissed from the list of top legendary monsters in Korea. Her name is Gumiho or the Nine-tailed fox in English.
Gumiho has been around in other parts of Asia as well such as China and Japan. In South Korea the legend goes that she wants to become human, but in order to do so, she must kill 100 men and eat their livers. At first she’ll seduce you by taking the appearance of a beautiful girl, then when you least expect it she’ll transform into her true form and eat you alive. Talk about creepy!
However, Gumiho’s story has made various changes throughout the years in South Korea. Gumiho in Korea are also portrayed as sad beings who simply want to become human beings. There are various process in which Gumihos can become human; Gumihos must eat livers of 100 men, or marry a man without getting him knowing their true identity for 100 days.
Besides many horror films in the past, Gumiho was also portrayed as a sad and cute being in the Korean drama “My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox.” The Gumiho role was played by actress Shin Min-ah and the male lead role was played by Lee Seung-Gi
