Happy Birthday!

Thursday, March 1, 2012

To me, to me, to me, to me!

Style Mauritius celebrates its first year of creation! Happy to see that all of you like it and participate regularly in the comments section, leaving useful feedback!
Next week you can expect one of the most exciting articles to come-stay tuned!

Coinciding with SM's birthday are a number of very exciting parties to go to. Summer may be over, but those late night cocktails, Friday after parties, events and more are only  just beginning!  And I have remarked with dread that people in general either go overboard on the glitz and the glam where its just way over the top or go too demure (think Angelina Jolie at the Oscars).

So here are the not so subtle nuances between the following occasions, and how to rock them. Presenting what to wear at a:

Cocktail Party

Georgia May Jagger

This is not a wedding, nor a corporate event, or any of the events listed below. You want to steer clear of anything floor length, unless its not too dressy (but even then, its risky!), flats (its not informal!), light coloured denim (if you really want to go for denim, go the dark kind), corporate wear such as suits, and anything that you would wear during the day.

Instead, opt for one metallic piece (the perfect way to add sparkle whilst keeping it hip and fresh, I prefer dark metallics), and make sure to play with texture (shiny, matte, soft, velvety, scaly, tough) so as to create the perfectly balanced outfit you want. You also want to make a statement with your accessories (if you haven't gone BOOM IN YOUR FACE [not recommended] with the clothing pieces, mind you). I could see the outfit above worn here easily.

Take what you would wear for a meeting with your boss(es) and jazz it up. Follow this rule and it's easy: for example, you could take a black dress, pair it with something edgier such as an oversize clutch and one piece of interesting jewellery. Just make sure you stay in the white, black navy and dark colour palette. Don't wear the same outfit you have already worn to work, don't go overboard on the make-up (subtle is key), and platforms, excessively high heels, denim and bright colours are strictly forbidden.

Birthday Party (Night)

Kate Moss

This is your day. Your time. So don't be lazy ( I have seen to many birthday outfits involving denim and a 'dressy' top) and HAVE FUN! Wear what works for you, not what you feel pressured to wear. Never wear  something you would wear during the day, or the dress you always go to when under pressure. You want to go for bright colours, dresses, skirts, statement accessories, dramatic volume and on trend cuts and silhouettes (now is the best time to try a peplum), metallics (one piece at a time is the golden rule), but keep the whole outfit grounded (with a neutral colour, or a matte fabric or accessory in there somewhere). Of course, the above photo really represents the ultimate in a birthday look.

The title says enough. It's like the birthday party scenario but much more on trend and experimental, and most importantly, fashion forward. Go for short hemlines, bright colours, a composition of textures and materials, platform heels (just make sure that the height of the heel and the hemline of your skirt or dress remain chic and elegant-no-one wants to look like a hooker), statement jewellery and the like, whilst always keeping it grounded with a neutral piece. Never wear jeans, workwear, safe hemlines or necklines, day wear and maxis.

And as for Black Tie events? Those really really important events? That will come soon in an article wholly dedicated to the matter.
One of the unmissable events of the week: The third Fashion Shoot Party, to be held at The Hennessy Hotel (Ebene, previously The Link Hotel). More details here.

And finally, the most important event of the week:

The Oscars!

This was how the blog began, after all. I was so inspired seeing Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Haute Couture last year, which gave rise to the following questions: Do many Mauritians watch the Oscars, or follow the red carpet coverage? And more importantly, are there people here as interested in fashion as I am?
And the reply was YES, YES, YES and now all everyone hears about is fashion, modelling, concept shoots, editorials, magazines and so on. It's a good start, I'm pleased to see so many enthusiastic people jumping up in support of the Mauritian Fashion Industry.

My favourite look of the night ( and the most controversial!) was Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford. Photos taken from TIME magazine.

Among the best dressed were Rooney Mara in Givenchy , Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen, Octavia Spencer in Todashi Shoji, Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab, and Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton.
