Emma Awards Fashion Show

Friday, March 23, 2012

The Emma Awards night was held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Balaclava a couple of weeks ago and I've received the photos this week (photos by Sachin Sagar, unless specified)!
The designers Annabelle Fleury, Anu Sumputh and Sweetie Ramlagun presented their latest-and best!-collections during the ceremony.

First up was Annabelle Fleury

Very evocative of the different cultures that make up Mauritius, Annabelle Fleury's collection was very dynamic, full of very rich, vibrant colours, fluid cuts, a true mastery of the technique of draping was evident. She does jersey like no other.

Many asymmetric pieces.

Here you can see a perfect demonstration of proportion: a looser, draped upper body with a tight fit lower body.

From frog buttons that were placed to join two strips of fabric near the bust, to a dress with a hood, this is one collection that laid emphasis on the small details that change the way fabric moves around the wearer.

So suitable for Mauritius, and so covetable, this is one collection that you are going to see on the street and on a girl’s night out evening near you very, very soon.

Anu Sumputh

Anu Sumputh blew everyone away, with a collection both romantic yet dramatic ( the cuts, the embellishments, the draping!) and that carried a slightly 20s feel to it, and perhaps even some Victorian elements-the blouse dress, for instance!

Decadent cream, ivory, pink and lace were on show, perfect for those black tie events, weddings and those occasions were you have to break out the absolute best.

There was a corset bodied dress that hit just above the knee before unfolding into a mermaid tail that was absolutely fantastic, an let me tell you Kitty Philips walked in that dress with such power that the whole effect it made it one of the highlights of the night.

Two heavily metallic-shine pieces were shown: One a white, decadent, Grecian silver gown, a 'moment of glory' if you will for every woman who shall wear it. It takes all the attention from everything else on the room and focuses on the wearer, dimming everything else. The way light hits on each part is exquisite.

In comparison, I would have liked to see sequins entirely cover the rich black dress, just for more added drama (the two dresses are shown consecutively below).

Anu Sumputh knows how to use lace: When large amounts of the fabric are used, she layers it over a black bodice, and when its becomes a detail, it rides subtly over the edges of the fabric or perfectly encases the upper back in a beautiful oval frame. It reminded me a little of Halston.

Because some of the photos of the pieces on the catwalk seemed overexposed because of the harsh light, I included the above photo so you have a better idea of the dresses, their fabric and colours, above.

I really used to think that you could only get dresses like these online or made, and ones such as the white Grecian gown were out of reach. I was totally wrong and I love that.

POSSAL by Sweetie Ramlagun

The collection, reminded me Vivienne Westwood for her eccentricity, of Marni in its layering of materials and of all the painters who shaped their generation- Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock-and just something just so Sweetie. It was loud, it was elegant, it was buoyantly optimistic, it was fiery, and I shall run out of adjectives soon enough. The theme was back to the rivers of belief.

It started out with a rich fuchsia dress with a big bow to the side, and evolved in many different ways: to a collection reminiscent of Mauritius-the layers of different materials in a couple of dresses felt a lot like those of sega skirts, others blending in elements of a saree, some details evocative of the far east, and then it evolved to art, with vivid graphic prints.

Bright florals were mixed in with purist black, in cuts that lengthen and slim the wearer. One of my favourite pieces was a bright, zesty orange which had motifs in its folds at the bottom of the dress, another of my favourite dresses has an exquisite, Asian deep-cut neck with small collars (below).

This short dress below will probably (if not already!) be bought soon. One of the most stunning pieces of the collection.

The collection showcased some very modern pieces such as the gown with blown up circles, draped and tucked to the side, cut out in the best way possible (one of my favourite dresses, below) Sweetie is a master cutter, this is clearly evident.

And that brought the show to a close. What a fantastic evening, and what a brilliant idea to have three of the best designers here showcase their collections! Fashion is a field that is currently under a lot of development here, and it deserves all the attention it can get.

Have an amazing long weekend!
xoxo
