Bring on 2012!

Wednesday, January 4, 2012

I trust you all had a super glamorous New Year!

After all your stunning evening outfits have been safely placed inside your closets, time to face a brand new month of a brand new year, making everyday a stylish one. A little thought every morning before choosing what to wear can make SUCH  a huge difference.

January is HOT, HOT, HOT.
Yeah, our wardrobe options are pretty limited with the weather here (unless you count an incredible selection of different bikinis and swimsuit options). Beautiful layers are out of the question.
But some small tweaks can make a huge difference to your everyday style.

I like thinking of Resort collections more than Summer ones when experimenting with a different look, because they (summer collections), although wearable in Europe when the average temperature in summer is
23°C, become horribly uncomfortable when temperatures can reach up to 33°C (not to mention the stuffy, moist humidity!) on our little island. Resort collections always offer something that can be incorporated in our wardrobes, and some elements are found in the Summer collections that follow, such as pyjama dressing:
It was a huge hit for both Resort and Summer 2012 collections, and so workable in our wardrobes-just take a pair of printed loose trousers in a very light material with some pjama/loungewear elements (if you feel uncomfortable trying this trend so head on, adopt trousers that have a tapered ankle so it feels more dressed up) and pair with a more tailored top that also carries a cool, breezy element. Could anything be simpler? I wouldn't suggest pairing both the pyjama top and bottom though-too easy and not visually as interesting as if it is incorporated something different.

Never underestimate the power of detail. Worn a different way, some of the most basic pieces in your wardrobe ooze chic. One of my style icons is Elin Kling, and I thought I should share some of her looks where elements of each (or the whole outfit) really works in hotter climates.

Take this outfit earlier last year ( http://stylebykling.nowmanifest.com ):

I love how she tucked in one half of her shirt in her trousers, perfectly exposing half of her statement belt. I don't see many Mauritian girls wearing shirts, most opt for the ubiquitous t-shirt, but you should really wear and experiment with different ways of wearing them!

Another look using a simple shirt ( http://stylebykling.nowmanifest.com/):

Very casual with the converse, washed out denim and a simple shirt tucked in a brown leather belt. So easy to adopt right now.

A more tailored shirt, paired with shorts ( http://stylebykling.nowmanifest.com):

And for something a little more formal (http://stylebykling.nowmanifest.com/):

Style on the Streets

All of the photos seen here are taken by Khatleen Minerve, one of the rising stars in the local photography industry who is as interested in fashion and the developments in the industry as I am! She has her own blog on tumblr:

Corrie

On one ear, she sports a DIY earring made from small pieces such as keys and a heart shaped lock which she found in the shops. How awesome is that?

Laetitia and her little brother

Kids tend to have a stronger sense of fashion than us supposed adults, because they aren't afraid to experiment. 7 year old  Laetitia insisted on posing with her little brother here, and they make such an adorable duo! She works a black printed poncho with one heck of a cute, spunky print from Mr Price with leopard printed shorts and pink flats with flower detail, both from Hong Kong. Take note-she wasn't afraid of pairing print with print, and she did it well: one of the prints (leopard) is relatively smaller in volume than the other on her t-shirt, which is the way it should be worn to best effect. Her brother clashed two colours-orange and green-for energetic on the go kid cuteness!

Prisca and Laura

Prisca wears a chic striped combishort from Rezo Chic (Jumbo Phoenix) and black velvet sandals from India, and Laura sports an off the shoulder top with mesh arms from Pridemark and the cutest pair of shorts ever from Mr Price, accessorised with a golden belt, a pair of brown heels from Shoe Point and a Guess wallet worn as a clutch. Although I love the choice of colours and the diversity of fabrics seen, I would recommend in Prisca's outfit to change the belt on the combishort (which is striped) for another belt so as to better differentiate and separate the upper body from the lower body, and in Laura's case to tuck her top in her shorts so as to see her belt.
Their favourite shops are ALDO, Rezo Chic, Guess, Tendances and Mr. Price.

Suvesha

Suvesha works a pale mint green chiffon dress with black collar bought in Topshop London, accessorised by a deep sorbet pink Prada Saffiano Luxo tote bag and black ballerina flats from Salvatore Ferregamo. This look is spot on and just perfect for summer, as she sports some of the major trends seen on the runways this season-sorbet colours (mint green dress, sorbet pink bag), romantic sweetness (hemline and neckline detail) all the while keeping it casual with a pair of chic ballet flats. Her go-to store for tops and T-shirts is Fashion House.

This is the last weekend for all of you who will go back to work (if you haven't done so already) and to school, so I'm guessing you'll hit the beach.
Here's an article to help you out which I wrote last year but the advice stays the same:
Summer Haze-On the Beach

If you're heading for a party on the beach or by the pool, I totally recommend the following ensemble: An In'Am poncho (still available in the shops, head there NOW) which come in summery sorbet orange, hot pink and cool turquoise:

Paired with some shorts (preferably in light colours, and short), with some chunky jewellery (I love what Forever Young offer!) and wedges or flats.

Hope you had a wonderful New Year and rock 2012 to the max!
xoxo
Alex
