Glasses are another portal for expression. And my God are they effective.
So today the article will be about glasses, and extra bits I can't make into an article.
Glasses frame your face just as eyebrows do-my purple Versace pair I bought three years ago from Monoptica (found in Floreal, near Clinique Darne. You can't miss it.The building has pink highlights) are the best ever-they enhance my cheekbones as well as my general bone structure.
How did I get the perfect pair?
A.Do not be afraid to try on as many pairs of glasses as you want.Believe me,before I decided on the Versace pair,I tried at least 25 different frames.
B.ASK QUESTIONS.Fire away. What would look better on my face shape? What colour goes better on my skin? No,the other person will not be irritated with the questions you ask,so don't be shy. They are potentially going to get cash. They are going to want to sell their glasses to you. Thus, they will help you.
C.Go to a professional. The person selling the glasses should know the basics on face shape and structure and what shape better suits your face.Plus,I would always ask and not heavily rely on what you consider to be your face shape because sometimes, its difficult to know.
But here are some guidelines all the same:
1.If you have a rather broad forehead but a narrow mouth and chin-think inverse pyramid,go for a thinnish rim and nose bridge.
2.Square-Go for some curve with a frame to counter the jaw.
3.Long and narrow face-counter the length of your face with glasses that cover the center of your face.
4.Round-counter roundness with angular frames
5.Oval-in general you can go with any frame style but always look critically and ask questions.
Of course this is the general, classic guidelines.Rules are often made to be broken.
Which comes to my next point.
Kookiness. You know, the not quite-perfect, a little weird, strange,"something's a little wrong here"look.I love it.Its different. In an age where everyone is obsessed with perfection, something different is like going outside on a hot summer day and have a cool wind blown on your face. Its refreshing. Its original-and makes people look twice.Kooky is also major on the runways.
Now someone may now ask,"how do I do kooky?"Well here's the principle. It comes from within. The key ingredient is originality and no-one can teach it,that would defeat the purpose.
But basically, its adding something that doesn't necessarily match the outfit. And can you do it with your glasses?Absolutely. And there are so many features that go into glasses that you can play with any one of them.Colour,shape,design-in the rims,on the thickness of the glass, the glass itself, the material of the glasses, the nose-bridge,and I could go on and on.But trust me,the only thing you need with kooky glasses is attitude. You need to be able to carry it with pride. And ignore the WTF stares.
These are from Prada.
The shape for Spring?Cat-eye.Very sexy, very feminine and worn by the likes of Marilyn Monroe, and the A-list.My favourite are these from Tom Ford.Presenting "Nikita".
Bright frames are en vogue.Check out the new Dolce and Gabbana (please, pronounced dol-CHE,and not dol-SEE) and Dior ads for inspiration:
Ever wished you had a portable do not disturb sign? That you could just hide your eyes that are watering and have destroyed your eye-makeup?
Sunglasses,people!
If your eyes are mirrors to your soul, and one of the first things people see when looking at you,you can bet that you want them to always look good.Very red,just-cried puffy doesn't work, but sometimes, you just can't help those situations from arriving. So what better way to hide them than by sunnies? You can see people all right, but they can't see you.Privacy-something that has been almost erased of our existence by facebook and twitter and so on.
Obviously, you want to protect your eyes from the sun too.No-one wants damaged eyes.
Other updates:
Model of the moment:
For the past couple of seasons, one of the "it "girls was undoubtedly Karlie Kloss (left). You couldn't open any fashion magazine without seeing her face. There is also Lara Stone,NOT a newcomer(she had difficulties breaking in because she is a UK size8-which makes her around 4 times the size of a regular model waif), Anna Selezneva, who burst in around 2008 if memory serves well, with Vogue describing her as one of the models who will make it big-she did;as well as the super-supermodel Coco Rocha, and I could go on and on about all the models who made it big these couple of seasons. But here is the model of the moment.
Here's one that has already propelled her career sky-high with an incredible amount of runway appearances:Arizona Muse.
Another model I don't think you may know about is Magdalena Frackowiack. She is stunning.
Why am I talking about models?Well in Mauritius, everyone claims to be a model-that is because there is no standard. Not in terms of beauty-you can't really judge that-but in terms of height. And controversially, weight.
I won't talk about weight here, but I will say this:Don't starve yourself to fit an "ideal".Just be as fit as you can be.If you are,at your fittest, and healthiest,a size 14 then you are equally as beautiful as someone who at their healthiest and fittest size is 0.Designers tend to prefer very thin aesthetics.Don't go into the modeling business with the aim"I will starve until I fit in those clothes".Whats the point? Are you really willing to put yourself under so much physical and emotional stress for a career? Its not worth it.
But here's the issue-you see,I wouldn't be writing this if the fact that it was innocent fun for everyone here to be a model.Because, unfortunately, people are willing to make big money off you-taking nude pictures of you claiming its art and selling them all over the place, paying you very cheaply, and even,in the most horrible cases, promising you a fantastic career and shipping you off to work as a sex slave.Have you trusted the credibility of your "agency"?What about your contract?Did you read it through?
Here are some facts:No matter how gorgeous you look, you probably won't make it in the international modeling world if you are below 1m72-aged 14.Once you've stopped growing, say 18,the standard requires a minimum of 1m75.Why?Because Mauritius is a tiny dot in the ocean, and there are terrifically tall(1m78-1m83 on average),super-thin women walking the runways that come from all over the world and they come en masse trying to make it big.If you are smaller than the average, you need the most fantastic face to make it,hopefully become a muse to a designer, etc. But even then, success isn't guaranteed.
The funniest part is,some of the more famous so-claimed models here are VERY big-headed.I think that is when the situation becomes excessively ludicrous.
So if you are approached to do the next XYZ ad,have fun-there will probably never be standards here.So its a good opportunity to boost your self-esteem-you must understand that modeling here is very different from what it is internationally, but you must still know what you are getting into.If you want to start a serious international career, get your facts straight and carefully consider it.It is not "strass and paillettes" falsely proclaimed by the newspapers and local TV.Its not very well paid unless you reach the peak. Before that, you may need to share a room with 20 other young girls,in an apartment with leaks, waiting months or even years for a job, suffering from homesickness, depression etc.And there is no shortage of girls waiting in line. Its hardly glamorous unless you really make it.Never forget that.
Anyway,I think I've written quite enough for tonight.
I think either tomorrow morning or next week,an article on the participants of the Elite model look contest will come out in l'Express.I will give my predictions of who may win.Good luck to all the participants.
And for any international viewers-two years ago,Clara Thierry was in the top 10 finalists in the Elite Model look Contest. She was brilliant-and only 14!here's a picture:
