The Bag.

Monday, March 7, 2011

Try living without a bag, even if its for one day.You won't be able to.You will feel naked.
This applies to people who, like me,bring their life essentials along with them everywhere.
Who wants to look like an over-packed pencil case, with phones and wallets sticking out in ever pocket?

It's almost like your safety net.It gives you something to do with your hands and arms. And its like your home away from home without looking like you are carrying a suitcase,if you are clever enough with the items you put in it.

First up:Every girl should have a bag that will stand the test of time,in its cut, material, and design.Something which will endure forever.
A classic example is the Hermes Birkin Bag.One should always have something of this design:It's simple but stands out,and can be brought along everywhere.

Another option is the Loewe Amazona Bag.

There is no point buying a bag which will only endure a season,or a particular point  in time-the "it" bags that are usually so mediatised.Even though the concept of "it" bags haven't exactly reached Mauritius yet, it still prevails in a form or another as a fad.See the bag that suddenly everyone bought from Roxy,Billabong or whatever store that everyone at school suddenly has,or bought for an evening out?Thats an "it" bag.Well at least a very loose definition of what an "it" bag should be.
Don't fall for it unless you really will use it forever. But it will date you.

Classic example:When I was in Form 4,4 years ago, there were three it bags-school bags mind you,not evening. One was a dark blue-light blue striped roxy bag,the other a billabong sort of satchel but it was big,and the last was a mickey mouse material black and white sort of bag.See how easy it is to date something like that?Off the bat.I guess school bags are OK because you don't really have any other alternative. But evening and chic day bags? No.You want to preserve that air of mystere. You want to stand out,not blend in.Its too easy to blend in.

Next you want something with colour:Something that will make whatever outfit pop and as I have said before, colour injects happiness.Find something big enough for day so you can put your essentials in-which I will get to later.

Then you want a great evening bag.Larger bags are for day.For night, you would rather opt for a classic clutch.
I love this one by Chloe. It's absolutely beautiful,as well as reasonably sized.

If you want to have something that you can hold in your hand b
ut still reasonably sized, look at something like this:

And for a really small clutch?

Be careful with skins though:The smallest detail will make it look super cheap.

And the one bag that will endure forever? The Patent Clutch.

You need to be very careful when buying bags.Don't give a damn about the looks you could get from the sales girl.Open it,examine the material with(clean!) fingers, see how it is stitched, if the fabric doesn't pull away with the slightest tug,if the buttons are sewn on properly..you get the point.
Before buying it,think all of the different places you could take it.If you really like it.If you see it with you in 10 years-it may be difficult but this will save you money.

Essentials:apart from the typical phone-keys-wallet,there are others:
1.Baby wipes or face wipes if you can find them. You do not want to be caught out with sweat dripping en masse from you pores.

2.Don't spend 10 minutes trying to find your favourite lipstick/eyeshadow.Go for a palette which you can store in your bag. This one is from NARS.

3.A cute diary.Inspiration hits unexpectedly.Be prepared to take notes. Some may argue that with phones you don't have to carry a diary with you anymore but trust me,the pen-on-paper action is incredibly satisfying.
