Discount Disciples

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Wearing: Discount Universe shirt, vintage blouse, Asos skirt and Dr Martens boots.

As you can probably tell, this shirt is approximately one trillion sizes too big for me BUT it's perfect for layering. I wasn't meant to buy anything this month but I had to buy this vintage blouse for $6 plus postage because I knew deep down that's the kind of regret one takes with them to the grave. One thing I forgot though when it comes to buying vintage is just how itchy old synthetic fabrics can feel against naked skin. The plastic buttons were maybe clear once but they've aged terribly and are the colour of pale ale so I plan on replacing them soon when I stumble upon the perfect, tacky flower buttons. I feel like Enid Coleslaw would have a really good button collection if she weren't already enamored with pop culture and into sewing rather than filling her sketchbook. As always, citing a fictional character as a reference to steal clothing/ craft supplies from is generally counter productive but hey! I've always felt more represented by figures of the imagination, rather than real people.

I must have a snake in my boot

Thursday, November 12, 2015

First I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise for the deception in case you were looking for snakeskin boots. I'm obsessed with snakes in fashion, but rather than wearing their skins I'm digging prints and patterns. Take this Poppy Lissiman clutch and Hayley Elsaesser dress for example. Both gorgeous pieces which I currently cannot afford.

You liked me cause I was blue

Wearing: Thrifted cheongsam and shirt, Asos Mimi pointed flats.

These little gem thingies are the greatest thing I've ever put on my face, and feel free to quote me on that. I guess what I liked most was devising a way to wear these beauties without the marginalization of a group of people. Plus my eyeliner just looked badass today. I've had this outfit on my mind for a while now and it felt so good to wear it. This dress is a little tight on me, so I do have a bit of a belly here but I don't care. It's nothing a good, billowing shirt worn open can't fix. While the photo editing is not quite there yet, I don't have time to spend hours and hours photocopying bits of scrap booking pieces for the perfect science/ vintage cross over. I'm saving that for when I finish- as well as television and video game binges. I'd love it if you guys could recommend me some witty shows with complex women to watch!! At the moment all of my energy is going into my thesis, and it's so surreal that it will be finished soon.

Boiler Room

Wearing: Country Road dress, POMS earrings and Dr Martens boots.

Things are starting to heat up! And I mean that both with my impending deadline (I'm as cool as a cucumber) and weather-wise. Melbourne seems to have skipped breezy, romantic transeasonal weather and dived headlong into Summer. It's forced me to delve deep into my closet and find my comfortable cotton dresses. It seems within the last year I've grown up a little and none of my dresses really screams out at me the way it once did. One of the first things on my to-do list once I finish is a wardrobe clean out and some eBay listings. I did however, want to show off this cute button up dress which I've had for a couple of years now, but never worn on the blog. They look wonderful with these fuzzy earrings, and I decided to go with my trusty Dr Martens, but I definitely need to invest in some espadrilles and sandals for summer.

First you get close then you get worried

Wearing: Turban Hats4Ladies (etsy), Miss Shop blouse, Target pants, Miu Miu clogs and Deadly Ponies bag.

It's strange how my sense of style has changed within the last year, whilst many days I try to challenge myself staples are becoming more and more important. These simple black trousers (something Mum picked up for me) are plain but I'm really into the tailoring and tight cuffs. It's also nice to create an outfit around one piece but then revisit some of the pieces I already have in my wardrobe. Feeling like I have so many things to do but in such a short amount of time has really taken its toll- both on my health and how I manage stress. It comes as no surprise I haven't had much time to indulge in the creative process, aside from how I dress and apply my makeup for that day. Even then documenting each outfit and curating images on this blog has become harder and harder. I can't wait to sit down and fill all my empty notebooks with lots of lovely thoughts and writing, as well as create mountains of different collages and sketches!

Rumble in the Jungle

Monday, July 27, 2015

Usually when we say the word "jungle" we refer to something chaotic or disorganized, but visually they are among the most cohesive surrounding on the planet. Aesthetically, colour is king and just about every life form has learned to advertise itself using colour or camouflage itself to hide amongst the plants. Both Hayley Elsaesser and Kenzo have recognized this and taken inspiration from the jungle in all its splendor. The animal menagerie you see before you is not too unlike that from Disney's 'The Jungle Book' way back in the 1960s. From things that slither to the most fearsome of feline predators, knitted prints and silk dresses captured the full spectrum of wildlife from the rainforest. Elsaesser has combined her loud prints with anthropogenic iconography such as eight balls wearing cowboy hats, whereas Kenzo have revistited their muse over a number of seasons. The end result is eye-popping colour in a range of comfortable and roomy shapes and silhouettes perfect for a walk through the savannah or traipsing through the forest.
